Dubai-based Emirates, the largest airline in the Middle East,  is set to to add 18 new flights a week into India. Starting 1 July, the increased frequencies will not only add an extra 5,900 seats a week, but with 132 flights a week Emirates will be offering the highest number of flights by any international carrier into the country.

The ramping up of services holds the potential of sparking a price war on the Gulf routes. Another premier MidEast carrier, Etihad, currently has 28 flights a week into India, and is due to add Calicut and Chennai in August.

Air Arabia and Jazeera Airways, the region's two low cost carriers are also adding new routes. India's Jet Airways may launch its JetLite subsidiary onto Gulf routes along with Air India Express, which too is mulling the launch of new routes.

Emirates may also launch its own low-cost brand soon.
