Pratt & Whitney bags $1.05 billion deal for F117 engines
03 Aug 2007
Pratt & Whitney (P&W), a United Technologies Corp company has bagged a $1.05 billion contract from the United States Air Force (USAF) to deliver F117 military transport engines. The contract is for new engine deliveries from 2007 through 2012, both for the USAF and foreign military sales in support of the C-17 aircraft programme. The Pratt & Whitney F117 jet engine is the exclusive power plant for the C-17 Globemaster III military transport plane.
The F117-PW-100 is a derivative of Pratt & Whitney’s world-class, reliable PW2000 commercial engine, which powers the Boeing 757. Owing to continuous product improvements, the engine surpasses established goals for time-on-wing, in-flight shut downs, and support turnaround time.
Other Pratt & Whitney military engines include the F100 that powers the F-16 and F-15, the F135 for the F-35 Lightning II; F119 for the F-22 Raptor; J52 for the EA-6B Prowler; TF33 that powers AWACS, Joint STARS, B-52, and KC-135 aircraft; TF30 for the F-111; PT6 for T-6A and UH-1N aircraft; and JT15 for the T-1A trainer and Pegasus UCAV.
Endesa buys two FT8 gas turbines
Pratt & Whitney Power Systems will supply Gas y Electricidad Generación, a subsidiary of Endesa Generación, with two 30-megawatt FT8 gas turbines for its power plant in Ibiza, Spain. The two units will run at peaking levels to maintain Ibiza’s power needs during the busy tourist season. While the first unit will start operating in the summer of 2008, the second unit will be commissioned in winter 2008. "With these two units, Endesa will have eight FT8 gas turbines for electrical power generation," Peter Christman, president of Pratt & Whitney Power Systems, said.
The FT8 series is a derivative of P&W’s JT8D aircraft engine, with updated technologies to produce power with less noise, lower emissions, higher base-load and part-load efficiency using natural gas. In production since 1991, it operates at more than 70 customer sites around the world, with more than 300 units installed or on order. The FT8 fleet has a reliability level greater than 98 per cent and has accumulated more than two million hours of operation.
Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, space propulsion systems and industrial gas turbines.
