ASCI rules against six ads in telecom, healthcare, FMCG sectors
08 Feb 2011
The Advertising Standards Council of India's (ASCI's) Consumer Complaints Council (CCC) has ruled against six advertisements in the month of October 2010. The companies that came under the ASCI scanner include Bharti Telemedia, Gillette India, Piramal Healthcare, Nuzen Herbal and Spaceage Multiproducts.
Bharti Telemedia was in the dock for two ads, one for its SMS communication and other for a television commercial.
The SMS campaign for Airtel Digital TV recorder had claimed the recorder was HD capable, which was found to be misleading. Airtel's TVC for its DTH service has been discontinued for claiming a free regional pack for lifetime when the company's DTH licence was valid only up to May 2018. The SMS campaign has been modified following the CCC's decision.
In the FMCG sector, Gillette India and Nuzen Herbal ads came under the scanner.
Gillette India, in an ad for its Oral B Cross Action Pro-Health toothbrush, (priced at Rs69) had claimed it was 99 per cent effective against plaque removal has also announced a lower price of Rs13 for another brush, Oral B Shiny Clean.
The CCC ruled that advertising the two differently priced products in the same ad would mislead the consumers in believing that the cheaper product will not be as effective as the other. Gillette India has modified the concerned ads following CCC's decision.
