Online advertising in UK soars past £4-bn
30 Mar 2011
Online advertising in UK went past the £4-bn barrier boosted by social media and video advertising, according to the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB).
A study by accountants PwC for IAB found that online advertising spending grew three times as rapidly as in 2009, registering a growth of 12.8 per cent in 2010.
Internet advertising also outpaced other media formats and now accounts for a quarter of all advertising spending in the UK, according to the figures. In short, £1 in every £4 is now spent on the web, according to the IAB.
''Major brands restored their advertising budgets in 2010 and online was a big winner,'' said, Guy Phillipson, the chief executive of the IAB.
Consumer goods makers joined finance providers and entertainment companies in the top three categories of Internet advertisers, the IAB said.
Display advertising on social networks in UK grew by nearly 200 per cent on a like-for-like basis in 2010.
