Which sport needs the fastest reaction time to survive on the field? Which sport does most damage to an athlete when it comes to impact? What does the perfect athlete look like? How do you figure out the angle of the attack to bend it like Beckham?

Discovery Science's Sports Science answers these fascinating questions and more while carrying out a new exploration into the world of science and testing the limits of athletic performance.

The new 13-part series, Sports Science, will take viewers into an exploration of the science and engineering underlying athletic endeavors. The new programme will air on Discovery Science every Wednesday at 8.30 pm starting from February 1st 2012.

Rahul Johri, senior vice president and general manager, South Asia, Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific, says, ''Discovery Science is dedicated to bringing cutting-edge innovations, explorations and technologies that have an impact on our everyday lives. It questions everything and goes beyond imagination to bring never-seen-before insights. Sports Science is a high octane series that unveils mysteries of the sports world via studio and field tests, stunning CGI animation and high definition footage.''

With the support of world's greatest athletes and brightest scientists, Sports Science will utilise cutting-edge technology to unveil the mysteries behind the sports. Additionally, it will explore the extremes of human ability and sports performance through first person exploits.

Dr. Cynthia Bir, professor of biomedical engineering at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, is the lead engineer in the Sports Science series. Using methods that have been developed to understand human injury biomechanics, and developing new techniques to address the unique challenges found when studying live volunteers in high impact and high speed activities, Dr. Bir helps viewers to understand the forces (internal and external) sustained and generated by the body during high level athletic activities.
