Power and automation technology major ABB today announced plans to invest Rs250 crore to build new facilities in India to manufacture high-voltage power products and transformers, both for domestic consumption and exports.

According to Pitamber Shivnani, manager (power products) at the company's local division, the new manufacturing units would further strengthen its local footprint and enhance the product portfolio.

The facilities, to be set up in Savli, near Vadodara, in Gujarat, will produce high-voltage gas-insulated switchgear and plug and switch system hybrid switchgear as also dry-type and oil immersed distribution transformers. The facilities would be operational by the end of 2012.

The new transformer factory would also manufacture vacuum cast coil dry-type transformers and oil immersed distribution transformers, which would help bridge a gap in the present product offering in India and extend the distribution transformer range, the company said in a statement.

It would also enable localisation of vacuum cast coil dry-type transformers, which would help in the reduction of environmental impact. The gear would find application in environmentally challenging conditions, the company said.

The ABB group has operations across 100 countries and employs around 135,000 people.

The press statement said the expansion was part of ABB's strategy to develop, manufacture and market products that met the needs of Indian customers.
