Airtel names its logo 'Wave'
13 May 2011
Close on the heels of a brand redesign that resulted in a new logo and positioning, telecom major Airtel has now christened its logo `Wave', in a crowd sourcing exercise through a six month-long online contest.
Wave refers to the sweeping changes that Airtel strives to bring to its customers, the company said.
Airtel, in November, had revamped its brand to give it a unified global identity as it expanded operations outside India. It was then that Airtel had initiated the contest inviting customers to recommend a name for the company's new logo.
The online contest attracted nearly 150,000 entries. Three names were shortlisted - 'Wave', 'Hug' and 'Curve'. Finally, 'Wave' won the contest.
The winning entry was by Mukesh Chauhan, an engineer from Noida, Delhi NCR, who has won a vacation in Thailand. Five voters have also won a Samsung Galaxy Tab each.
JWT handles the creative campaigns of Airtel while Madison handles the media buying and planning operations.
Airtel has operations in 19 countries across Asia and Africa with over 220 million customers across its operations as of end-March 2011.
