New Delhi: In 1954, Bell Labs pioneered the development of solar power technology, creating solar panels able to support the telephone service of American farmers living off the electricity grid.

More than 50 years later, Alcatel-Lucent in conjunction with SunPower Corp and ConEdison Development it will install a 1.2-megawatt ground-mounted solar power system at the company's Bell Labs headquarters campus in Murray Hill, N J.

Founded in 1985, SunPower Corp among the most powerful solar technology broadly available today for utilities, government, busines and residential requirements.

Launched in 1997, ConEdison Development focuses on the development, ownership and operation of renewable and energy infrastructure projects in the US Northeast.  Through acquisitions as well as greenfield development, ConEdison Development has owned, operated and marketed 1700 MW of electric generating facilities.

The system is expected to go operational next spring, Alcatel-Lucent said in a media statement.

SunPower will design and install the solar array system using SunPower T0 Trackers, which will position more than 3,700 solar panels to follow the sun's movement during the day. The trackers increase sunlight capture by up to 25 per cent over conventional fixed-tilt systems while significantly reducing land use requirements.
