Alstom bags $30 mn BHEL deal for Odisha power plant

Power equipment manufacturer Alstom has been awarded a contract by state-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) worth close to $30 million (Rs252 crore) to supply components and services for the 2x660 MW Banharpalli Super Thermal Power Project (STPP) in Jharsaguda, Orissa.

Alstom bags $30 mn BHEL deal for Odisha power plantUnder the contract, Alstom will work with BHEL in designing the boilers and supply identified pressure parts of the 660 MW supercritical boilers, along with windboxes. It would also assist BHEL with technical advisors during the erection and commissioning of the units, a statement from the company said.

The key components will be manufactured in Alstom's facilities in Concordia (US), as well as in Durgapur (India). The units I & II are expected to be commissioned by 2018.

The contract comes in addition to contracts signed with BHEL between 2008 to 2014 for supercritical boilers in Barh II, Krishnapatnam, Bara, Yermaras, Bellary, Mouda, Nabinagar, Gadarwara, Suratgarh and most recently the Darlipalli and North Karanpura projects in India.

"Alstom's supercritical boilers satisfy the most stringent environment requirements and help in achieving 3-4% higher plant efficiency compared with conventional sub-critical design," Patrick Ledermann, vice-president of Alstom Thermal Power & Renewable Power in India, said.
