Apple develops location-sensitive locking system for mobile devices

Apple has filed a new patent for mobile technology that could change a mobile phone or tablet's security level based on the user's location, without having to punch-in digits every time to access them.

If the user is at home, or a place that is "safe", no password would be needed to access the mobile device. But if the device is in a public place, users could increase the preset security setting, possibly requiring a more complex passcode depending on the locational risk.

The mobile device would determine the location using GPS and also by analysing other aspects like available WiFi networks and the presence of other devices nearby to set the security level.

''Based on the detected current location, the mobile device can modify settings and configurations. Security settings are one example of device behaviour that can be modified in accordance with embodiments of the present invention,'' said Apple in the patent filing.

''Because some locations may be inherently more secure, such as a user's home or office, these locations may be considered "safe" and require less stringent security,'' explains the patent. ''Conversely, some locations may be considered higher risk or "unsecure." In these locations, it can be desirable to implement stronger security protections.''

"Some locations may be inherently more secure" and the security requirements will help ensure that a mobile device is in safe hands.

Although Apple is yet to secure a patent and the mobile technology is yet to be implemented, the concept is new.

Once the patent is granted and the technology incorporated, iPhones would unlock within the vicinity of the home but remain locked outside the home.

The smart phone would determine its location using mobile phone signal, Wi-Fi networks, GPS, Bluetooth or the phone's proximity to other phones.
