Apple to launch iPhone 8 at Steve Jobs Theatre
01 Sep 2017
Apple will unveil the iPhone 8, the 10th anniversary edition of the iconic iPhone, at a theatre named in the honour of Steve Jobs, who memorably unveiled the original iPhone more than a decade ago.
Apple has sent out invitations for the event, confirming the rumored date and location of 12 September at the new Apple Park campus.
According to commentators, it will mark the first time an event will be held at the campus and at the 1,000-person-capacity Steve Jobs Theater, a fitting venue considering the hype and expectations around the next set of iPhones.
Though iPhones have not changed much physically, over the last three years, the iPhone 8 is expected to represent a huge leap over its predecessors.
The event will be held at Apple's new "spaceship" campus and the floor plans suggest a venue similar to the flagship Fifth Avenue Apple Store in New York, with a grand round glass-encased structure that serves as the entrance to the underground theatre.
Meanwhile Bloomberg News reported that Apple Inc planned to transform the way people used its next high-end iPhone by eliminating the concept of the home button and making other adjustments to the flagship device that will become almost all screen, according to images of the new device it claimed to have viewed and people familiar with the gadget.
The home button is the key to the iPhone and the design has not changed much since its 2007 launch.
Currently, it takes users back to the starting app grid that they see many times a day. They hold the button down to talk to the Siri digital assistant. On double clicking, one gets multitasking where different apps, screens can be swiped through like a carousel.
The new model's overall size will be about the same as the iPhone 7, but it will include an OLED screen that is slightly larger than the one on the iPhone 7 Plus (5.5-inches), people familiar with the product told Bloomberg News.
