Technology giant Apple will hold a media event on 4 October to unveil the iPhone 5, All Things Digital yesterday reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Although the Cupertino, California-based company has selected the launch date, it could change its plans at any time, sources told the technology paper.

But instead of Apple's chairman Steve Jobs unveiling the next series of the iPhone, the newly appointed CEO Tim Cook would lead the show and the iPhone 5 is expected to be available weeks after the unveiling.

Going by Apple's earlier iPhone releases, the iPhone 5 is likely to hit the stores by mid-October.

This would be the first major launch by Cook after he took over the reins of the company late last month from Steve Jobs, who stepped down saying that he could no longer meet his duties and expectations as Apple's CEO.

Jobs has been battling a rare form of pancreatic cancer since 2004 and a liver transplant worsened his health, which forced him to go on leave since January this year.
