BHEL bags Rs2,665 crore order for Chhattisgarh thermal power plant

India's largest power project exporter, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has bagged an order worth Rs2,665 crore for setting up a 1,200 MW thermal power plant (2x600 MW) in Chhattisgarh.

Dainik Bhaskar Power (DBPL) has placed the order with BHEL for supplying and installing for their upcoming coal-based thermal power plant located at Baradarha in Janjgir district of Chhattisgarh.

Media house Dainik Bhaskar Group-owned DBPL, an unlisted company, plans to set up three thermal power plants in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh with a total generation capacity of up to 2,690 MW.

The company, which had already been allotted two captive coal mines in Chhattisgarh with 100 million tonne reserves, plans to set up the Chhattisgarh plant with a capacity of 1,200 MW and expects it to be commissioned in 2011.

BHEL is a leader in thermal power equipment manufacturing, suited to Indian coal.

A majority of the orders secured by BHEL for power plant equipment in fiscal 2009-10, came from the private sector. Out of the total orders of 16,489 MW, private sector orders accounted for 14,689 MW or nearly 90 per cent of the total orders booked.

Following the news of the order, shares of BHEL rose by 0.43 per cent or Rs12 in today's early trading to touch Rs2,450.70 from Saturday closing of Rs2,438.70.
