Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has been awarded the tender to supply and install the main plant package at the upcoming Jhajjar super thermal power project in Haryana, involving three units of 500 MW each.
Valued at over Rs 2,900 crore, the orders were placed by Aravali Power Company Pvt Ltd (APCPL), a joint venture company of NTPC, IPGPL and HPGCL.
This is the highest value boiler and turbine generator (BTG) package contract for a single project ever received by the public sector power equipment supplier
Due for synchronisation during the 11th Plan, these units will add 36 million units every day to the grid on commissioning, which will be shared by the power deficit states of Delhi and Haryana. Power from the first unit will also be used for the Commonwealth Games to be held in Delhi in 2010.
BHEL has fully established state-of-the-art technology for manufacture of thermal sets up to 500 MW rating and has the capability to manufacture sets up to 1,000 MW rating. So far, it has received orders for erecting 58 power units of 500 MW rating sets of which 31 have already been commissioned.
Having acquired technological competence in smaller capacity powerplant, BHEl is now embarking on introducing 800 MW thermal sets with supercritical parameters, suited to Indian conditions and capable of being fed Indian and imported coal. BHEL is also shoring up its capability for higher rating hydro sets and advanced gas turbines to cater to upcoming market requirements.
BHEL is expanding its manufacturing capacity, due for completion in the next three years, to supply equipment for generating 15,000 MW per annum, up from 6,000 MW at present at an investment of around Rs 3,200 crore.
