Mumbai: Central airconditioning and commercial refrigeration major, Blue Star, has been awarded the contract for revamping the airconditioning of the Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi. The Airport Authority of India (AAI), after evaluating various competitive bids awarded the contract to Blue Star. The order is valued at around Rs9 crore.

Blue Star is already executing airconditioning projects for AAI at three other major airports in Mumbai, Kolkata and Ahmedabad.

AAI is in the process of revamping the facilities at various major airports in the country. Along with other interior improvements, this activity is aimed at providing comfort cooling conditions for the passengers.

In embarking upon this upgradation, AAI had in mind the need to improve energy efficiency in the airconditioning system. Owing to Blue Star''s energy-efficient cooling solutions, the new airconditioning system will work with nearly 25 per cent lower power consumption. The old airconditioning plants which were both energy inefficient and environment unfriendly (CFC) are being replaced with energy efficient and ozone friendly R134A chillers (8 x 600 TR).

Another unique feature of this project is that the revamp/replacement work has to be carried out without causing stoppage of traffic at the airport. Blue Star, which has done many similar projects like this is fully geared to implement the execution, as per the customer''s requirement.

Once the main plant is ready, AAI will be in a position to upgrade the internal airconditioning system of the terminal building in a phased manner.
