BT plans trial operation of 1 Gb fibre broadband in UK next year

BT has announced plans to carry out trial operation of its 1 gigabit fibre broadband in Suffolk, UK, next year. It will also add 40 rural market towns to its current fibre roll-out.
BT said the move would support the UK government's plan to create the best broadband network in Europe by 2015.
The plans come after revelations by regulator Ofcom that less than 1 per cent of UK homes have a super-fast broadband connection.
Meanwhile, Jeremy Hunt, culture secretary, is due to spell out the broadband strategy of the UK next week.
The 1 Gb trial in Kesgrave, Suffolk is set to begin early next year and will demonstrate the speed capabilities of BT's fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) technology.
BT has come in for criticism for its failure to offer FTTH more widely as most of its fibre roll-out will rely on slower fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) technology.
