Comcast to extend 1 Tb cap across 18 more areas

Comcast says it plans to extend the 1 Terabyte cap, which it has been testing in select areas since April this year, from 1 November. The new areas include California, Colorado, and Oregon.

According to Comcast, 99 per cent of its customers used less than 1TB of data over the course of a month, the median usage is just 75GB, a report from Engadget said.

According to commentators, the amount of data used by the average person was only going to increase in line with the way users consumed entertainment.

A recent report said that the game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered required a  whopping 130GB of space available on users' system, meaning that anyone looking to download the game would be using big chunk of their allotted terabyte.

Cord cutters who streamed 4K video rather than watching TV also ran the risk of approaching the cap.

However, users who exceed 1TB of data usage would not be penalised for the first two monthsthaat they exceeded the limit in a 12-month period. After that, they would be charged $10 for each additional 50GB of data they used, up to a maximum charge of $200.

Meanwhile, Comcast clarified on its site that The Terabyte Internet Data Usage Plan was a new data usage plan for XFINITY Internet service that provided users with a terabyte (1 TB or 1024 GB) of Internet data usage each month as part of their monthly service.

''If you choose to use more than 1 TB in a month, we will automatically add blocks of 50 GB to your account for an additional fee of $10 each.  Your charges, however, will not exceed $200 each month, no matter how much you use.  And, we're offering you two courtesy months, so you will not be billed the first two times you exceed a terabyte.  This data plan is based on a principle of fairness.  Those who use more internet data, pay more.  And those who use less Internet data, pay less.''
