Bangalore: Microsoft will be launching Windows Server 03 in April 2003. S Somasegar, corporate vice-president, Windows engineering solutions and services at Microsoft, says the product has been significantly enhanced in the core areas of reliability, security and scalability. His group is responsible for the project and release management of the Windows family of products.
The dot-net tag for the product was removed as customer feedback revealed lack of clarity in the company’s .Net branding strategy, he says. Security concerns of corporates have been enhanced following the damage caused to the earlier server models by viruses such as Code Red and Nimda.
And it was a reason why significant time and resources were allocated for security issues of Windows Server 03, adds Somasegar. The company, for the first time, deployed its entire team of 9,000 engineers working on Windows platform to focus on the security aspects of the product.
“Besides an internal security penetration team, university students and security consultants were enrolled to perform security tests. Security has been baked into the engineering process,” says Somasegar adding that there is no guarantee, however, for the product being invulnerable.
