Fiat Chrysler Automobiles to end diesel passenger car production by 2022

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is set to end diesel passenger car production by 2022, but, this may not apply to trucks, according to a published report.

The plan, reported yesterday in the Financial Times, comes after a drop in consumer demand in Europe after the fallout from the Volkswagen emissions scandal, where the German company installed software for cheating on emissions tests on millions of vehicles, and also heightened interest from regulators.

Fiat Chrysler does not currently sell any diesel cars in the US or Canada, but they are popular in Europe and Asia due to their greater fuel efficiency.

According to commentators, the revelation does not mean the company will eliminate diesels from its entire lineup.

The Netherlands incorporated Italian-American automaker, which has its US headquarters in Auburn Hills,  is expected to continue to offer diesel options in some SUVs and trucks in the US, including the Jeep Wrangler and Ram 1500 pickup.

Ford and General Motors have also included diesels in their respective lineups, including the 2019 F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado.

The plans of Fiat Chrysler also point to the continued collapse of what has been a key fuel source in Europe, according to commentators. Forbes, for instance, reported that diesel sales in Germany were down in January to 33.3 per cent of the market from 45.1 per cent during the same month a year ago.
