As the number of consumers upgrading to sedans from hatchbacks increase, Ford India has come out with new offerings in the segment by launching the new Fiesta carrying a slightly premium tag.
The new Fiesta is the first of the eight products the automaker is planning to launch in India by 2015. It would be offered in petrol and diesel variants for Rs823,500 (ex-showroom Delhi) and Rs927,200 (ex-showroom Delhi), respectively.
The new Fiesta is powered by engines made at Ford's Chennai plant and the automaker has recently announced an investment of $72 million for expanding its powertrain facility in Chennai.
According to Michael Boneham, president and managing director, Ford India, the company was also looking at using the engines for upcoming product line.
The company, however, is not revealing much on the additional seven launches it has promised to line up. However, with a view to gain larger volumes, the company plans to focus on hatchbacks.
Analysts however point out that entry price of Rs8.23 lakh is significantly higher than rivals like Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Volkswagen Vento.
