Ford Motors recalls 140,000 Focus compact cars over windshield wiper defect

US car maker Ford Motors is recalling more than 140,000 Focus compact cars over defect in the passenger side windshield wiper.
The US safety regulator The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said a seal in the wiper motor wiring may be missing, which may lead to water getting inside and cause the wiper to stop working.
The fault increases the risk of a crash, said the NHTSA.
''Water or other contaminants may accumulate in the connector, resulting in an intermittent or inoperative passenger side wiper motor, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of a crash,'' said Ford.
The affected cars, which have been a best-selling compact car in the US market, were built from 1 August 2010 through 18 October 2011 at its Wayne, Michigan assembly plant.
The Detroit-based car maker said there have not been any crashes or injuries from the fault.
Ford said that its dealers will seal the wiring free of charge and fix any wipers that do not work.
Ford expects to begin the recall on or about 21 May.
