Ford has announced a recall of 433,000 of its newest cars and sport utilities - including almost 375,000 in the US - because drivers might not be able to shut off the engine, even after pressing the ''stop engine'' button, the automaker said yesterday.

The problem with the 2015 Focus, C-MAX and Escape models was a computer malfunction.

The owner of a 2015 Escape wrote to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in May that when he tried to shut the engine it did not stop and it was still running when the car was being towed. Ford said it had no knowledge of any accidents or injuries.

The software would be updated by dealers to fix the issue.

About 375,000 of the recalled vehicles are in the US while Canada and Mexico account for the remaining.

The recall would affect cars with the conventional, keyed ignition switch as also those with the keyless, push-button version. The production dates of the affected vehicles are:

  • Focus models built at the Wayne, Michigan, assembly plant from 17 June, 2014 to June 12, 2015
  • C-Max hatchbacks built in Wayne between 22 April, 2014 and 12 June, 2015
  • Escape SUVs built in Louisville from 1 April, 2014 to 12 June, 2015.

This comes as the second recall in less than a month for the Escape, which was recalled in June because of a fault with its instrument cluster.
