Freelander 2 to widen JLR portfolio

Sports utility vehicle Freelander 2 from the Land Rover stable, now owned by Tata Motors, will be on sale in India from November this year (See: Tata Motors launches compact Rover SUV 'Freelander'). The company will also sell the 2010 Ranger Rover and Range Rover Sports from November this year followed by Discovery 4 by the end of December.
The company has decided to discontinue selling Discovery 3 as it managed to sell only two of them so far.
The 2.2-litre diesel Freelander 2 comes in three variants - S, SE and HSE priced in the range of Rs33.8 lakh to Rs 45 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai). The company says the Freelander 2 will compete with brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi.
The 4x4 Freelander 2 also sells in UK, France, Italy, Spain and China and has been around since 1997.
The latest version of the SUV, which started selling from 2006-07, is said to deliver outstanding on-road performance as well as class-leading off-road ability. It is available in both petrol V6, and four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine.
The 320cc V6 version belts out power of 230 bhp whereas the 2.2-litre diesel version yields torque of 40.8kgm from 2000 rpm. and a power of 156 bhp. The engine is combined with a six-speed automatic gear.
