04 Mar 2010
GAIL is carrying out detailed feasibility study to double the capacity of its petrochemical plant at Pata in UP from 410 kilo tonnes per annum (KTA) to 800 KTA, the minister of state for petroleum & natural gas Jitendra Prasada informed the Lok Sabha today.
The government was planning expansion and capacity addition of existing plants to ease the demand-supply situation, the minster said adding that the new LPG plants at Bhatinda in Punjab and Paradip in Orissa will be completed by next year.
The third new LPG plant at Bina in Madhya Pradesh will come up between July and September in the year 2010, he added.
Pointing out that LPG production in 2008-09 was 93,35,000 metric tonnes, minister said the consumption was 1,23,44,000 metric tonne leading to import of 23,60,000 metric tonne to partly offset the shortfall.
"There are 11 crore LPG connections today compared to 8 crore connections earlier. There is a shortfall and it is met through imports," he said.
The provisional production for 2009-10 between April and December was pegged at 76, 07,000 metric tonne, Prasada said.
