GAIL to set up 1000 MW power plant in Punjab’s Ropar district
12 Jun 2012
The Punjab government has approved the setting up of a gas-based 1000-MW power plant, to be set up in Ropar district in collaboration with the Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL).
Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal gave in-principle approval to the project at a meeting with a team of senior officials of GAIL led by its chairman and managing director BC Tripathi, a spokesman of the chief minister's office said.
The proposed plant, to be set up in Ropar, about 50 km from Chandigarh, will have three units of 330 MW each. The first phase of the project will see a unit of 330 MW being set up and two other units could be added at a later stage depending on the success of the unit, the spokesman said.
The CMD of Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd (PSPCL) will convene a separate meeting with the top brass of GAIL to chalk the strategy for setting up the gas-based power plant.
Availability of land will not be a constraint for the project as 150 acres of land is readily available in the vicinity of the Guru Gobind Singh Super Thermal Plant at Ropar.
"About 150 acres of land is already available in the vicinity of the Guru Gobind Singh Super Thermal plant at Ropar, besides assured gas supply from Dadri-Nangal pipeline," the spokesman said.
The financial viability of the project has already been assessed, the spokesman said.
GAIL will now have to put up the required gas infrastructure to ensure supplies of natural gas to the project.
