GE to build largest solar panel plant in US

Global technology leader General Electric (GE) today announced plans to build a 400MW thin-film photovoltaic (PV) module plant in the US, the largest such facility in the country so far.
The plant, which will start operations in 2013, will use the cadmium-telluride (Cad-Tel) technology for making PV panels.
The project, to be located in an yet-not-identified site, will have an annual capacity to produce solar panels capable of generating 400 megawatts of power.
The plant will employ 400 workers and create 600 jobs indirectly, reports quoting GE sources said.
General Electric has been investing heavily in solar panel production with the aim of becoming a major player in the PV module market.
"For the past five years, we've been investing extremely heavily in solar," said Victor Abate, vice president for GE's renewable energy business. "Going to scale is the next move," he added.
