US-based call centre systems provider Genesys Telecommunications Laboratories Inc, is in talks to buy Avaya Inc's contact center business worth more than $4 billion, Reuters reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

Genesys is one among others, including private equity firms, that have contacted Avaya about a potential deal, the report said.

Avaya, one of the world's biggest suppliers of telephony systems, had earlier hired Goldman Sachs as advisor on selling some assets in order to reduce its $6 billion debt.

California-based Avaya, which was acquired in 2007 by private equity firms TPG Capital and Silver Lake Partners, specialises in Internet telephony, wireless data communications, and Customer relationship management (CRM) software.

It services over 300,000 customers, including 83 per cent of the Fortune 500 companies at over 1 million customer locations worldwide and is ranked at 101 on Forbes America's Largest Private Companies.
