Chennai: Finding the traditional middle level management development programmes costly vis a vis the benefits, HCL Technologies Limited is now betting on Made in HCL, a sort of in-house training module.

Says the company's global head-HR R Vaidyanathan, “Seventy per cent of our engineering talent has less than five years work experience. The industry delivers a product that has a life span of three years.“ The challenge is to identify and develop a leadership pool.

From art / science form, software programming is now slowly changing into an engineering form. But the traditional methods to identify future managers from a vast talent pool, like sponsoring employees to outside programmes, suffer several disadvantages.

According to Ganesh Chella, CEO Totus Consulting Services (P) Limited, “Such programmes help to develop only the individual employee. In addition, he gets an overdose of information. Post training, the employee finds it difficult to implement his learning at the work place as his manager or colleagues are not around when the learning happens.“

The city-based Totus Consulting designed the Made in HCL training module. According to Chella, the programme shifts the emphasis from employee training to employee learning.

The programme will be first implemented in HCL Technologies' six centres in Chennai where it has 250 project managers. Recently, the first batch of 50 project managers were trained under this project.

Agreeing that this would reduce the employee attrition rate Vaidyanathan adds, “95 per cent of the attrition is at the junior level of employees having less than five years of experience.“
