Health insurance for tsunami families

Chennai: United India Insurance Company Limited has launched a health insurance policy for the below the poverty line 2004 tsunami-affected families living in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Pondicherry.

Launching the central government sponsored policy in the city on 18 March 2007, the union finance minister P Chidambaram said, the policy would cover 4.5 lakh tsunami affected families. The central government will bear the Rs 36 crore premium.

He also called upon the officials of United India and the district collectors to check whether the policy benefit actually reaches the families covered. He also called upon the hospitals to offer medical assistance to such families with compassion.

The policy covers the head of the tsunami affected family, spouse and three dependent children for hospitalisation expenses of a maximum of Rs 30,000 per family per year. The sum insured floats over all the family members but has sub limits for different expense heads. The policy also covers pre-existing ailments. According to the officials, the policy also provides for cashless treatment at networked hospitals.

In addition the head of the family is also covered for Rs 25,000 against accidental death and permanent total disability.
