The 2014 Honda City Diesel has emerged as the most fuel-efficient car in India, having achieved an ARAI rating of 26 kilometres to the litre.

Honda Motors India thus continues to retain the title of making most fuel-efficient car in the country, after the Honda Amaze, which earlier this year earned the billing as the most fuel-efficient carwith a mileage of 25.8kmpl.

According to commentators, the performance of  the City came as no surprise, since both the models are propelled by the same engine- a  1.5-litre i-DTEC Earth-Dreams diesel mill.

The City also comes with similar specs, delivering a max power output of 100 PS and 200 Nm torque. The cars do not however, share the same transmission gear Amaze has a manual 5-speed drivetrain as against the City which uses a 6-speed gearbox.

The Honda City diesel, arguably the most eagerly awaited car launch of the year in India, has fully lived up to the hype created during the run-up to its launch. The car is powered by a diesel engine 1. 5 litre iVTEC petrol engine delivering 98 bhp and a torque of 200 Nm.

The diesel mill of the car uses a 6-speed manual gearbox. Honda also offers a 1.5 litre iVTEC petrol engine with a maximum power of  118 Bhp and 145 Nm torque. The petrol powerplant offers two transmission options- a 5 speed manual and a CVT automatic gearbox.

According to the company's senior VP (sales & marketing) Jnaneswar Sen, fuel efficiency was not just a concern for buyers of small cars today. He added, mileage had always been important in India in the premium segment too as was evident from the high number of diesel luxury cars on sale.

He added, when the company developed the new City, it was clear that it had to be the most fuel-efficient in the segment, while retaining the power. He added, the company was happy that it was now the best in the industry.

Apart from the engine, fuel economy for the new City diesel had improved with the adoption of various measures such as better aerodynamics, introduction of low rolling resistance tyres for lower friction and the addition of a sixth gear.

The new City, based on the Jazz platform comes with enhanced interior space than the outgoing model.

It will also be offered with a 1.5 litre petrol engine offering 18 kmpl fuel efficiency.
