Honda Motor Co's India unit today said it would recall 57,853 units of the City sedan for replacement of a faulty part, as part of a global exercise.

The company added it would replace the lost motion spring in the valve train in City cars that rolled out between November 2008 and December 2009. The company said it would carry out the replacement on a free of cost basis by informing customers directly.

According to Honda, the recall would not impact the most recent version of the City sedan currently under production and sale in India.

The company added, Honda Siel would proactively replace the part in these vehicles with a new improved part. It added lost motion springs, that are compressed by rocker arms in normal engine use, may bend or break over time, resulting in abnormal engine noise and potentially cause the engine to stall and lead to problems in re-starting.

This will be the second recall of City sedans after January last year, when the auto maker recalled 8,532 City sedans manufactured in 2007. At that time the company replaced defective power window switches that could cause a fire.(See: Now Honda issues global recall of three models)

The company's current models produced in India include the City, Jazz, Civic and Accord. Additionally, the atuo maker also imports and markets CR-V sport utility vehicle.

"The recall announced by Honda applies to certain units of Fit/Jazz fitted with 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine, which is sold in other countries and not sold in India," the company said. The Jazz comes powered by a 1.2-liter gasoline engine in India.
