Mumbai: Technologies Ltd plans to set up a new development centre in Kolkata. The campus will involve an investment of Rs500 crore and will create more than 5,000 jobs in the first phase, Infosys said in a filing with the Bombay Stock Exchange.

The company has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state government for leasing 90 acres of land.

"We have signed an MoU with the state information technology department early this month and decided to invest Rs500 crore and recruit a workforce of 5,000 in the first phase," Infosys CEO and managing director S Gopalakrishnan said after meeting chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

"It will be multi-technology and multi-service development centre and would be the 11th centre," he said.

"Kolkata has become the new hotspot for IT in the East. Going forward, we expect to see more of such investments coming into the state. We are very happy on having Infosys here in Kolkata,'' Debesh Das, minister in charge of IT, said.

"We are very excited to announce our intention to set up a presence in Kolkata. We are impressed with the efforts of the state government in attracting such investments. With its bright talent pool, West Bengal is poised to become an important IT destination," Gopalakrishnan said.

Infosys last week said it would add 25,000 employees in the current financial year that began on 1 April.
