Infosys to boost its Australian staff strength by 100

Indian IT major Infosys plans to hire around 100 staff in Australia to meet local demand for outsourcing services, even as the Australian economy shows signs of slowing.

Infosys, which specialises in selling back-office services to banks and other large companies, had last week won a A$450 million application development and maintenance contract from Australian telecom operator Telestra.

Infosys, which currently has around 2,500 employees serving Australia and New Zealand, with about 1,000 of them located in Australia, said it planned to add to its Australian staff one month after the awarded of the five-year contract.

Infosys said it would recruit mostly senior and middle level staff, with ''some junior level employees who have graduated within the last few years.''

The news comes as a boon to recession-hit Australia where the unemployment rate is expected to rise from the current level of 5.8 per cent to at least 8.0 per cent by the middle of next year.

Off-shoring of Australian jobs to countries like India, the Philippines etc, mostly by banks, has also sparked protests in Australia.
