10 Dec 2011
IT major Infosys Technologies is to start work on the construction of its first software development centre in West Bengal at Rajarhat near Kolkata in three to six months, according to a top company official.
"We have paid the money and got possession of the land. We hope to start construction work in three to six months," Infosys Technologies executive co-chairman S Gopalakrishnan said on the sidelines of a CII event in Kolkatta yesterday.
He said the first phase which will involve an outlay of Rs100 crore would see the creation of 5,000 jobs.
He said while 35,000 professionals had been hired so far this year, another 10,000 would be taken on by end March, next year. The company has a workforce of 1.40 lakh at present.
Responding to a query as to whether Infosys would shift its focus outside the US and Europe due to the slowdown in the economies there, he said any shift would take time.
"We are looking at the markets of China, South Africa, Malaysia and Indonesia," he added.
According to Gopalakrishnan, despite the global turmoil, the IT sector had shown resilience and there had been no lay-offs.
"There would, however, be consolidation in IT sector and those who have the niche capability will survive," he said.
