iPhone overtakes BlackBerry sales in Canada
24 Mar 2012
Apple's iPhone has overtaken BlackBerry in Canada, a blow to the Canadian company, with the US company shipping 2.08 million BlackBerrys last year in Canada as against 2.85 million units for Apple, data compiled by IDC and Bloomberg show.
In 2010, BlackBerry beat iPhone by half a million, and in 2008, the year following the iPhone's debut RIM outsold Apple by almost five to one, Bloomberg said.
BlackBerry struggled over several quarters as iPhone and Android devices stole a march over it grabbing higher market share.
In January RIM named a new CEO, Thorsten Heins, who launched an aggressive marketing campaign to revive the brand, however, according to analysts, they had yet to see substantial improvement.
According to some analysts, RIM remained under a challenging transition period.
They say the situation at RIM would likely get worse before it got better and management was likely to face another challenging quarter.
Shares of RIM were down 0.9 per cent to $13.66 Thursday. The company's stock was down 11 per cent year to date.
