L&T awarded Rs1366-crore worth power projects in Gulf region

Mumbai: Mumbai-based diversified engineering and construction major today said the power transmission and distribution unit, part of Larsen & Toubro's construction division, has bagged major EPC orders from GCC countries aggregating to Rs1,366 crore.
The orders comprise Rs597 crore worth contract in Saudi Arabia to L&T's subsidiary Larsen & Toubro Saudi Arabia LLC, Rs497 crore order from UAE, Rs185 crore order from Qatar and Rs87 crore worth order for JV company L&T (Oman) LLC in Oman.
It includes construction of 225km overhead transmission line, 66 km of underground cabling including eight substations and associated cabling works from Saudi Electricity Company for the Haramain High Speed Railway.
Once completed this project will feed power to Haramain High Speed Railway system, which will link Medina and Mecca via Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. The scope involves complete engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of towers, conductors, insulators, OPGW, and fittings. The project will be completed in 24 months.
L&T has also received two EPC orders worth Rs497 crore from UAE. The larger of the two orders was placed by Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC), valued at Rs422 crore for the construction of five medium voltage substations and associated 33kV cabling works for ADPC's Khalifa Port & Industrial Zone Project, contracted for completion in 18 months.
The development of Khalifa Port Project will replace the existing Mina Zayed port by 2012. L&T is currently already executing of three substations including 230km of 33kV cabling at Khalifa Port. The other order, valued at Rs75 crore has been placed by Dubai Electricity & Water Authority for the construction of 132 kV cabling and associated works, to be completed in 11 months.
Simultaneously, L&T has secured a breakthrough order worth Rs185 crore from Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation for engineering, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of 66-km of 220 kV underground cabling works.
This order, part of KAHRAMAA Phase X, is the first 220 kV cable order for L&T in Qatar and this has been bagged against stiff competition from International Cable OEMs.
In addition, L&T (Oman) LLC – a JV company of L&T in Muscat Oman has secured a Rs.87 crore (USD 19.3 Mn/ OMR 7.4 Mn) order for the construction of 3 MV substations including the associated 33 kV cabling works from Muscat Electricity Distribution Company, to be completed in nine months.
