L&T secures Rs2,000-crore project contract from ONGC Mangalore Petrochemicals

Engineering and construction major Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) has secured a major order valued at Rs2,035 crore from ONGC Mangalore Petrochemicals Ltd (OMPL), for an aromatics complex, to be set up at the Mangalore SEZ.
This complex will produce aromatic products, namely paraxylene and benzene as well as other byproducts like hydrogen, heavy aromatics and LPG, starting from naphtha as a raw material, the company said in a release.
The project involves nine process units, including naphtha hydro-treating unit, continuous catalytic regeneration and platforming unit, Parex unit, Isomar unit etc.
The project will be executed as an EPC contract, and is expected to be ready for commissioning by December 2012.
The OMPL project will utilise the world renowned technology licensed from UOP - USA.
The scope of work includes residual basic design, detailed engineering, procurement, fabrication, construction, installation, pre-commissioning, testing, commissioning and performance test run, L&T said in its release, adding that the award of the contract demonstrates L&T's integrated capabilities in executing critical process plants for the petrochemicals sector.
The Hydrocarbon Mid and Downstream Business group of L&T's Engineering & Construction Division won the contract, which is currently the single largest paraxylene unit being put up in India, against competition from global EPC companies, the release added.
The $8.5 billion technology, engineering and construction group Larsen & Toubro is one of the largest and most respected companies in India's private sector with global operations.
