16 Nov 2007
The Scania multi-axle tipper truck used in the construction and mining sectors, priced in the Rs58-65 lakh rang, was launched at the ongoing construction equipment and technology trade fair, Excon 2007, in Bangalore.
"We are aiming for 25-35 per cent market share in this class of trucks as early as possible," J P Nayak, director and president, (machinery and industrial products division), L&T said.
L&T''s construction & mining equipment unit will be in charge of Scania truck sales and service in India. L&T has a broad-based sales and service network and represents several other products, including Komatsu.
"Having L&T as our partner is a great advantage, since the company already has well-established relationships with customers in the mining and construction industry. With Scania in its product portfolio, L&T has a complete range of vehicles and machinery for demanding construction applications. In light of this, we expect to achieve annual sales of 700 trucks within a few years," Martin Lundstedt, group vice president and head of franchise and factory sales of Scania, said.
The truck that Scania is now launching in the Indian market is a P380 model four-axle tipper. It is equipped with a tipper body that permits a load volume of more than 18 m3.
This class of trucks witnessed sales of 650 units in India last year and in the current financial year it''s projected to grow to 1,000 units, he said.
"Our expectation is that heavy vehicle market will grow at a faster pace than in the past", he said.
The other major players in this category of trucks in India are Volvo, Daimler and Tatra, said Nayak, who added that Scania tipper trucks meet advanced emission standards.
