M&M’s Andhra tractor plant to start production next month

Mahindra & Mahindra, India's largest manufacturer of sports utility vehicles and farm equipment said yesterday that it would begin commercial production of tractors at its new plant at Zaheerabad in Medak district of Andhra Pradesh in the second week of January.
The automobile manufacturer already has a manufacturing unit in Zaheerabad which produces utility vehicles, three-wheelers and light commercial vehicles. The 343-acre plant has a capacity of 218 vehicles per day and a workforce of around 640 people.
The new tractor unit being completed at a cost of Rs300 crore will have the capacity to produce around 300 tractors per day and will provide direct employment to about 2,000 people.
After a business meet with leading industrialists, the state's major industries minister Geeta Reddy told reporters in Hyderabad that the state is witnessing significant growth on the industrial front.
"Of the 115 proposals we have received during the partnership summit last January, 10 have already gone into production while another 73 are under implementation,'' Reddy said.
According to the minister, the state's industrial growth in 2011-12 was 7.33 per cent which was nearly double the national average of 3.95 per cent.
