M&M ties up with Japan’s MAMC for making rice transplanters for Indian and export markets

Farm equipment and utility vehicle major Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) yessterday  announced its deal with Mitsubishi Agriculture Machinery (MAMC).

MAMC is a unit of Japan's Mitsubishi and under the licensing and technology transfer agreement M&M would make rice transplanters for the Indian market as also for exports.

The equipment will be produced at M&M's Nagpur facility and M&M has targeted around 5,000 rice transplanters a year for the domestic market under its own brand. The product would also be exported to China and SAARC countries,

President of M&M's farm equipment business, Anjanikumar Choudhari, said at a press conference that the rice transplanters would help increase agricultural yield by 20 per cent over manual operations for. The equipment help increase productivity will reducing cost of operation, he added.

He added that rice transplanters offered a revenue potential similar to that of tractors in India. Mahindra is the largest tractor maker in India with a 42 per cent market share. The company sold 1.6 lakh tractors in 2009.

Domestic tractor sales are expected to rise to 3.9 lakh units this year as against 3 lakh units last year.
