Mahindra’s latest SUV, the XUV700, has been certified with a five-star rating by the crash test rating agency Global NCAP, making it Mahindra’s second car to get a five-star rating after the Mahindra XUV300.

Mahindra XUV700 scored 16.03 out of a total of 17 points. The crash test found out that the potential injuries to the front passengers could be marginal.
The car has also received the highest points ever for child safety rating. It scored 41.66 out of a maximum of 49, the highest for any made-in-India car. The car’s structure has also been rated as stable.
“It’s very satisfying to see Mahindra demonstrating an ongoing commitment to vehicle safety with the five-star performing XUV700. High levels of occupant protection for adults and children are important indicators of the Indian automotive market moving towards an ever higher level of consumer awareness and demand for safety,” David Ward, president of the Towards Zero Foundation, said.
Global NCAP tested the base variant of the Mahindra XUV700 that only gets two airbags, ABS and ISOFIX as standard. Mahindra offers as many as seven airbags with the top-end variant of the vehicle and there are features like ESC and ADAS available with the higher-end variants as well.
The crash test rating agency has recommended Mahindra to offer the side and curtain airbags as optional equipment in the lower variants to improve the safety of the occupants even further. Two cars were crash-tested at the facility since a car needs to pass the side-impact test as well. The XUV700 excelled in this department as well.
“Mahindra has achieved a major milestone with this top score for adult protection and by becoming the first Indian made and owned brand to offer Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) as a safety option. Making this life saving technology available is an important step in encouraging the widespread fitment of crash avoidance technologies. Mahindra is one of the leading manufacturers in India, committed to improving their vehicles in response to Global NCAP’s call to democratise vehicle safety,” Alejandro Furas, secretary general of Global NCAP, said.
Global NCAP also tested the Autonomous Emergency Braking or AEB feature of the top-end variant of the car that gets ADAS. Even that test came as a success for both vehicles and pedestrians.
But, with over 75,000 bookings, Mahindra XUV700’s waiting period is now close to one year, the longest after the Thar.
The car comes with a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel and a 2.0-litre mStallion petrol engine. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 lmph in just 5 seconds.
Mahindra offers three driving modes with the all-new XUV700 that will change the behaviour of the engine. Mahindra has not revealed the official power and torque figures of the all-new XUV700.
The petrol engine generates a maximum power of 200 PS and a peak torque of 380 Nm, while the diesel mHawk generates a maximum of 155 PS and peak torque of 360 Nm. Mahindra has not revealed the transmission options as of now.
Mahindra, meanwhile, is planning to launch 13 new SUV models, including 8 electric SUVs by the year 2027.
At an online press conference to announce the company’s third quarter financials last week, Rajesh Jejurikar, executivd Director, said Mahindra and Mahindra is planning to introduce 13 SUVs by 2027. These will include 8 electric models. Between 2025 and 2027, Mahindra plans to launch 4 electric SUVs in the market.
Out of the 13 SUVs, the company has already launched the Thar. A 5-door version of the Thar is expected to debut post-2023. The next-generation Scorpio will be launched in 2022. A hybrid version of the XUV700 is also on the cards.
