Malaysia Airlines orders 55 Boeing 737-800s, to take delivery of six A380s in 2011

Malaysia Airlines has announced an order for 35 B737-800s, with options for another 20, and also an agreement with Airbus regarding the delayed delivery of its six A380s.
The narrow-body order is worth $4.2 billion at list prices, if all options are exercised.
Delivery for the 737-800s are slated to begin in September 2010, "when the weakness of the global economy should be less of a concern," according to MAS MD and CEO, Idris Jala.
The new orders will replace the carrier's 737-400s.
MAS also said it can swap the -800s for -900s if it so chooses. "We will likely partially purchase the 737-800 on our own and partially lease them as that would give us the flexibility to manage our balance sheet and financing commitments, and to sell some of them when the time is right," Jala said.
Separately, MAS announced that it will take delivery of its six Airbus 380-800 super jumbos in the period January-August 2011 under an agreement with Airbus that "include an agreed amount of compensation for the delay."
The super jumbos were originally scheduled for delivery in the January 2007- December 2008 period.
