Maruti restarts Manesar plant amid tight security
21 Aug 2012
Maruti Suzuki India today reopened its Manesar plant near Gurgaon in Haryana and resumed production after a month-long lockout caused by extreme violence by a section of workers in which a senior company official was killed, 100 others injured, and the plant damaged.
Workers were this morning reported to be standing in queue outside the factory gate to enter the plant amid heavy rain and tight security. The Haryana police have provided 500 personnel, out of which 200 are inside the plant and 300 in areas around the facility.
Besides, the company has also formed its own special security force numbering 100, which includes ex-servicemen.
''Production has resumed at the Maruti Suzuki Manesar plant today (Tuesday) morning,'' a company spokesperson said.
According to a Livemint report however, only 65 workers are inside the plant. The company has sent out letters to at least 300 workers to join work on day one, but very few workers have re-joined far.
The company had earlier announced that only 300 permanent workers will resume work. Maruti Suzuki chief operating officer (administration) S Y Siddiqui had said on Monday that the workers would operate just a single shift from 8 am to 4:30 pm.
