Maruti Suzuki hikes car prices by up to Rs9,000

Maruti Suzuki India Limited, the country's top carmaker, today announced an across-the-board increase in the prices of its vehicles, ranging between Rs1,100 and Rs9,000 or 0.2 per cent and 2.4 per cent.

Maruti Suzuki said the increase has been necessitated by an increase in the prices of raw materials and components.

The price hike is effective from 4 April, reports quoting company sources said today. However, the company has not detailed the changes in the prices of its various models.

This is the second time the company is increasing car prices in just over three months. Maruti Suzuki had, in January, hiked prices by up to Rs8,000 across the board, except its newly launched compact car Alto K10.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, which is majority owned by Japan's Suzuki Motors, sells 15 models in India - from the entry level small car M800 with a starting price of Rs1.97 lakh to the latest sports sedan Kizashi, which is priced at around Rs17.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

The auto industry has been under pressure, especially after the catastrophe in Japan, which almost dried up the supply of high-end auto components across the world.
