India's largest passenger car manufacturer by volume, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL), sold a total of 62,996 factory-fitted CNG vehicles in FY 2014-15, a 23-per cent rise over the previous year. The contribution of CNG vehicles to total sales increased to 5.4 per cent, from 4.9 per cent in FY 2013-14.
Maruti Suzuki, the first Company to introduce factory-fitted CNG cars in India in 2010, offers six dual fuel (CNG+Petrol) models namely Alto, Alto K-10, Celerio, Wagon R, Eeco and Ertiga. The CNG variants of Alto K-10 and Celerio were launched in 2014-15.
CNG is a cleaner fuel and emits a negligible amount of particle pollution (PM10 and PM2.5), the company said in a statement.
In cities like Delhi and Mumbai, where distribution infrastructure is in place and CNG for automobiles is easily available, almost 50 per cent sales of Wagon R, Eeco and Ertiga are of the CNG variants.
Maruti's CNG vehicles are powered by intelligent Gas Port injection (i-GPi) technology, which works on dual-engine control unit technology.
This system delivers accurate amount of gas to the engine thus ensuring improved and consistent performance under various driving conditions, the company said.
