Software giant Microsoft yesterday made its cloud-based operating system commercially available for use in India.

Users can access the power of Widows Azure, a cloud-based operating system hosted in Microsoft's data centres at $0.12 per hour while storage on Azure would cost enterprises $0.15 per GB on a monthly basis.

The web edition of its database service SQL Azure will be on offer at $10 per month for up to 1 GB while the business edition of its database service would be available at about $100 per month for up to 10 GB of database per month.

According to Rajan Anandan, managing director, Microsoft India, all popular products are already cloud-ready, and the company has a clear future roadmap to provide anytime, anywhere access across diverse devices spanning computer, mobile and internet.

Microsoft says it has over 3,000 applications developed from India currently on the cloud platform with about 250 small and medium-sized customers in India.

According to the company's estimates, with the Windows Azure Platform, customers and partners stand to gain from a reduction in Total Cost of Operations of key workloads by up to 30 to 40 per cent over a three year period.
