Microsoft Corp yesterday said that it would acquire developer of large touchscreen displays Perceptive Pixel (PPI), for an undisclosed sum.
Microsoft's CEO, Steve Ballmer announced the proposed acquisition at the company's annual Worldwide Partner Conference in Toronto.
Privately held PPI, founded in 2006 by Jeff Han, is a leader in interaction design, having pioneered the research, development and production of high-performance multi-touch platforms that allow users to present their ideas more effectively.
The New York-based company shipped its first multi-touch workstations and large wall solutions in 2007 and gained widespread recognition for transforming the way CNN tracked results of the 2008 US Presidential election.
In 2009, the Smithsonian awarded PPI the National Design Award in the inaugural category of Interaction Design. In 2011, it introduced the world's largest projected capacitive display, and unveiled the first-ever simultaneous pen and touch solution in 2012.
Its patented technology is used across a wide variety of industries, including broadcast, government, defense, energy exploration, higher education, engineering and product design.
