Reliance Industries chief Mukesh Ambani has refuted reports that he was planning to acquire a stake in the English Premier League club, Liverpool.

Media reports had suggested that the Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries and the Sahara Group led by Subrata Roy are in the race to acquire stake in the UK football club.

The Times had reported that Mukesh Ambani was one of two bidders from Asia who were interested in acquiring a stake in the Liverpool FC.

"There is no truth to the report. We deny it completely," Sudeep Purkayastha, a spokesperson for Reliance Industries, said.

Both Mukesh Ambani and Subrata Roy are reported to have offered to pay off Liverpool's £237 million debt in return for a 51 per cent stake in the club.

Roy, however, refused to confirm or deny the report. "We are presently not in a position to comment," a Sahara spokesman said.

Mukesh Ambani, the world's seventh-richest man, owns the Mumbai Indians cricket team in the Indian Premier League. His investments in RIL are worth $19.5 billion, according to the Forbes magazine.
