Mumbai Rail Vikas places equipment order worth Rs1,120 cr with Bombardier

Mumbai Railway Vikas Corp (MRVC) has awarded a Rs1,120 crore ($214.42 million) contract to Bombardier Transportation Inc for supply of railway equipment, under a project that is funded equally by the World Bank and the Government of India.
The order comes after Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd in September placed an additional Bombardier Movia metro cars from German train maker Bombardier for approximately Rs551.4 crore ($120 million). (See: Delhi Metro orders 76 additional metro cars from Bombardier) MRVC is a joint venture between India's railway ministry and the Maharashtra government.
Under the deal, Berlin-based Bombardier will design, manufacture and test propulsion and control equipment for trains and other equipment including fans, compressors, passenger information systems and high voltage instruments.
The order relates to a total of 72 commuter trains of 12 cars each. Deliveries of the equipment will start in the last quarter of 2012 with completion of deliveries in the third quarter of 2014.
The production will take place at Bombardier's plant in Maneja, India, and supported by Bombardier's sites in Mannheim and Hennigsdorf, Germany.
Bombardier's Propulsion and Controls Production and Development Centre at the Maneja site in Vadodara, Gujarat, was recently expanded and has been supplying Indian Railways with converters and electronic devices for train control and communications.
