Mumbai’s suburban rail stations to get food plazas, fast food outlets

Railway passengers may soon be savouring better fare at suburban rail stations if things work to plan.
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) plans to set up 29 food plazas in six months in addition to five fast food units at Andheri, Masjid, Kurla, Ghatkopar, Mulund, Wadala Road and Panvel stations.
A food court is also slated to open by end-March at Mumbai Central.
IRCTC officials announced at a press conference yesterday that the corporation under the rail ministry was diversifying and would set up food plazas on highways, and at malls, offices and even clubs.
Tenders for 28 food plazas and 30 fast food outlets, will soon be floated.
According to Virender Singh, group general manager, IRCTC, west zone, the first Bharat Tirth special tourist train, which would pick passengers from Maharashtra, will start on 3 March from Pune. The train would pick up Mumbai passengers from Kalyan.
